| My previous experience at
Red Hills was for lunch. Last night
my wife and I and another couple went for
dinner. The Montrachet and roasted
garlic was as good as I remembered
it.
I was
overjoyed they still had raspberry
sorbet. It too was just as
spectacular as the first time I tried
it.
The wine
list was excellent...as were various
wines by the glass.
But the
entreés...$16.50 for pasta with marinara
clam sauce? Anywhere else in
Portland that would be MAYBE $9.50.
My wife's "chicken picatta" for
$18.50 tasted like fried chicken
(granted, lightly fried, but fried
nevertheless).
Our
friend's had a filet...excellent, but at
$24.00, hardly a bargain; and pasta with
mushrooms in a sherry cream sauce...again
excellent, but too much money.
Trying to
drive to any place in Dundee at 5-6 pm
through the hoards of cars heading down
99W makes the trip unpleasant
enough...but these prices combined with
the traffic make me wonder how they will
continue to attract much business.

| Considering the four Dundee
restaurants of which I'm aware, this is
my favorite! It doesn't pretend to
be something it isn't, the noise level is
low, the food is excellent and the
Raspberry Sorbet is simply the best I've
ever eaten! Located in an old farm
house, Red Hills Provincial Dining, is a
bit difficult to enter...you park in back
and enter from the back porch. The
wine list is extensive and the selections
for lunch cover a fairly wide range of
options.
I had the
Montrachet in grape leaves with baked
garlic and a salad Niçoise; my wife had
the pork with Dijon mustard. Both
were excellent.
But the
Raspberry Sorbet...just
spectacular! Very cold, very, VERY
full of raspberry flavor...the best
sorbet I've ever had anywhere. I
WILL BE BACK FOR MORE!

| Red Hills is in the quaint
town of Dundee, Oregon. It exists
in an old, remodeled farm-type
house. The dining area is not very
large - but the atmosphere is
great! I had lunch there on Sept.
14 which consisted of dungess crab cakes
with a sun-dried tomato suace, rice
pilaf, salad and foccasia bread.
The crab cakes were done to perfection -
very light tasting with subtle
spices. The sun-dried tomato sauce
was likewise flavorful. The
foccasia bread was the best I had ever
had. The price was $9.95 - a little
steep for lunch - but you get a good
return for your money. They also
carry an extension wine list. The
Dundee area is known for great vineyards
and boast more than several. |
