| Assaggio is an excellent
Italian restaurant...but frankly, I have
to question its consistent placement
among the top 20 restaurants in
Portland. The wine list is impressive;
the menu is full and comprehensive, but
not as complete as Riccardo's, a
restaurant which never "makes
it" into the top 20 restaurants in
Portland.
I
particularly like pasta with garlic,
olive oil and mushrooms. Assaggio's
has just such an entree, but with the
addition of spinach. When asked if
I could have the dish without the
spinach, the waiter replied:
"They don't let us make changes to
the menu items." Pity.
"OK, then I'll have the Putanesca,
but can I have that with Penne instead of
spaghetti?" No problem.
Hmmmm.
The
Putanesca was excellent, but the penne
was certainly not prepared correctly,
being quite gummy and chewy. My
dining companions had excellent pasta
dishes however.
The
appetizers were excellent, especially the
salmon mousse and tomatos and
olives.
Very
good...but not in the top 20 restaurants
in Portland.
