Gino's Restaurant and Bar, Portland, OR P389

I've rarely encountered a more FUNKY restaurant...replete with sewer pipes/water pipes exposed near the ceiling (presumably from the apartments above).

Let's see...Gino's.  To get in, you enter the door under the sign marked Gino's, right?  Nope.  There's a sign on that door saying to go to the right to the "copper door"...hmmmm...nope not the next door either.  That goes upstairs to some apartments.  Ah...there it is...the "copper door"...but...the "copper door" goes into the Leipzeig Tavern...and by entering through the Leipzeig Tavern you eventually get to Gino's.  Not nearly as difficult as it sounds, but a bit cumbersome.

Oh well...I went to Gino's specifically for the caesar salad recommended by a friend and I wasn't disappointed...Huge Caesar Salad for $9 and absolutely FREE of the horrible "white gloppy stuff" that normally passes for dressing in Portland.  It wasn't the best Caesar I've ever had, but it did rank about 6.5 on a scale of 1 to ten.

On the positive side:  It used good garlic and lots of it!  The Romaine lettuce was cut into pieces...not 8-10" pieces of lettuce you're supposed to eat with your fingers as has become the norm in many Portland restaurants.  It was big!  The croutons were home made and excellent.

On the negative side:  It lacked a bit of "kick" or "bite"...perhaps a lack of worchestershire sauce and/or lemon juice and/or vinegar.  It was a bit weak from lack of anchovies...and...it was VERY, VERY cold.  That, in and of itself, isn't a bad thing, but this salad was so cold it was like it was placed in a very cold refrigerator while my dining companion's chicken marsala was being prepared...well, perhaps it was.

The chicken marsala was good...the wine list was excellent...but really:  $6 for about 2 ounces of a mediocre Chianti was a bit much.

Otherwise, the "caesar salad experience" was a good one!
