Sylvia's, Portland, OR P24

With the national interest in "low cholesterol", Italian restaurants are thriving in Portland and most are excellent.  These newer restaurants tend to be a bit up scale and trendy, but not Sylvia's.  I've eaten the same excellent minestrone soup at Sylvia's for at least 25 years; ditto the same Italian salad dressing...just like my Italian mother-in-law makes.

While other Italian restaurants may have existed in Portland longer, probably none can match Sylvia's "home cooked" style which seems to have been around forever.  Sylvia's is not fancy, but tends to cater to families.  If the kids want spaghetti and meatballs, you can get it at Sylvia's...but you can also get excellent veal picatta and other upscale dishes found at the trendy restaurants.  My only complaint is the bread...tiny loaves of white bread, baked on the premises I'm sure.  It's OK, but not very Italian.

Service is usually excellent and parking is easy on all but the most crowded Friday and Saturday nights.
