The last time I dined at the Refectory, I was reasonably impressed...but that was November of 1999.  Having just eaten there again this week...I guess "things" have changed a bit.

Still not a bad "quasi-Continental" restaurant...but no big deal.

The Prime Rib was a lovely piece of meat and very tender...but it didn't have much flavor.

While the Caesar Salad didn't have "white gloppy stuff" for dressing, the beige runny stuff wasn't very good.  (And could someone please suggest to these folks they spell Caesar correctly?  I guess it's not the worst thing in the world, but it sort of sets the frame for the poor Caesar.)

Onion rings...VERY heavily coated with batter and quite greasy.

And the waiter/water boy really didn't have to fill our glasses every 2 minutes did he?  It got to be a bother after a while.  I guess I shouldn't complain...it was better than having to wait.

A Top Pick in the Area

Thirty or so years ago, a series of Refectory restaurants opened in Portland.  They were essentially a "steak and salad bar" restaurant and they spawned a host of imitators...back in the days when "steak and salad bar" was the way to eat.

Since the demise of "high cholesterol dining", the "steak and salad bar" restaurants have now all closed except for this location.  It has been kept open, slowly changed and now is essentially a "continental" restaurant.  The salad bar is gone, and in its place are "normal" dinner salads brought before the entreé.

I had the special of the evening, fresh Chinook salmon and it was excellent.  The others in my party had steak, chicken and pasta...all nicely prepared and very good.

If you're in Northeast Portland and are looking for a continental restaurant, give the Refectory a try.  You won't be disappointed.
