| This was a fun place! They
had peanuts in a barrel as you walk in.
Soon, I noticed that peanut shells were
everywhere. I grabbed a bowlful myself as
the peanuts were free. The menu had
"Snack-Atizers", salads, soups,
burgers, sandwiches, pasta, steaks and
seafood. The MacTarnahans (a golden ale)
on draft went perfectly with the peanuts.
I ordered
the Choice Rib Eye as did most of the
others in our party. The entrees were
served with homemade yeast sweet rolls,
honey butter and we had a choice of two
of the following: house salad, soup,
Caesar salad, baked potato, French fries,
garlic mashed potatoes, baked sweet
potato, rice pilaf, seasonal vegetables
or fried apples. Wow!
The Caesar
salad was great! I could actually taste
the lemon juice and anchovies. After most
of the peanuts in our bowl was eaten the
steaks came. They were cooked exactly as
specified, a rare exception these days.
My rare was truly rare. The outside was
nicely broiled, yet, the inside was hot.
The steaks
were supposedly USDA Choice, Midwestern
grown, grain fed, aged 21 days or longer.
My rib eye was indeed a very nice cut. I
was not quite sure that it had been aged
as long as advised. It may have been but
probably at a colder temperature. The
trim could be better as I had gathered a
small pile of fat and tough parts on my
plate.
I really
should not complain as Billygan's was
probably one of the most satisfying steak
houses around. I sure was glad that the
steak was not any larger after all the
peanuts!
