| Salute is a neighborhood
restaurant nestled in the Ravenna area of
Seattle. My housemate and I each
independently noticed this place, its
windows always full of seemingly happy
people. One Friday evening we
decided to sample the local fare, so into
the car we hopped (it's close, but it's
also Seattle and was raining) and off we
went. There are two main rooms, one
of which has a more intimate, classy
feel, the other more casual and
fun. Service was quick and
friendly, though I couldn't tell if the
waiter was really Italian or just
pretending to be. We started off
with a cold calimari antipasto which was
light and refreshing. The bread was
fresh and weighty, but the olive oil
wouldn't be mistaken for premium.
The salad was a pleasant Caesar. I
had a rib-eye steak special, served with
a green peppercorn and corn sauce.
The meat was prepared to the proper
doneness, though I found the sauce a bit
too sharp - dominating rather than
complimenting the meat. My
housemate had their seafood spaghetti, a
red sauce generously anointed with fresh
shellfish and other seafood. I did
not taste it myself, but found its aroma
to my liking, and she thought it quite
suitable. Overall, I thought that
the food was good and appropriate to the
somewhat aggressive Seattle
price-scale. Most meals will run in
the $10-$15 range, topping out at
~$22. Appetizers are ~$7. The
wine list is moderately priced, mostly
Italian, with few selections by the
glass. They recently began
accepting reservations for parties of
more than three, but otherwise you may
want to plan around peak dining
hours. We showed up around 7, and
the place filled quickly after. |
