| A Top Pick in the
Area |
| |
| The Chinese food was not
quite top notch as we would find in
Richmond, B.C. but it was as good as you
can find in Yakima. The service has
always been excellent. Prices were very
reasonable. As reviewed last year, lunch
was very inexpensive. Several people may
order different dishes and have it
"family" style.
The dinner
menu was extensive and the dishes were
prepared more carefully. The garnishes
were beautifully crafted, something quite
wonderful for Yakima.
The wine
list featured some very fine wine from
this area at extremely reasonable prices.
Surprisingly, they offered wines from
Portteus Vineyards, again, not commonly
found anywhere. Although I couldn't quite
picture what I would find on the menu to
go with a great cab.

| It was impossible to have
lunch in an hour at the Oriental Garden
when it first opened in June. Things have
settled down now and we have visited it a
couple of times for lunch. The menu was huge
with many authentic Chinese dishes. An
additional luncheon menu offered dishes
ranging from $4.95 and up. The luncheon
menu dishes were all served with a cup of
soup, a salad, and fried or steamed rice
on the side.
The lunch
special Kung Poa Chicken had lots of
tender chunks of chicken breast, cashew,
and diced vegetables. It was properly
spicy with pieces of dried chili pepper.
Great thing about it is that you can pick
out the pieces if the dish was too hot
for your liking. Most importantly I
detected "wok essence" -
something that happens only when food is
cooked on really hot woks. This was
something not commonly found in
restaurants around here. The dish was
$5.95.
Another
dish that I had was the Hot Braised Fish
($6.95). It was pieces of white fish
lightly battered, deep fried then braised
in a red sweet and sour sauce with onions
and chili. It was done nicely but a
little too sweet for me. My wife had the
Walnut Shrimp ($7.95). Peeled shrimps
were lightly coated with something like
mayonnaise and stir-fried with walnuts in
a very hot wok. This dish was served on
an iceberg lettuce bowl. It was great!
We'll have
to check out dinner soon as the menu
looked fantastic!
