West Coast Market & Garden, Tofino, Vancouver Island, B.C. P79

There was a wonderful little market on the left just before Tofino. The variety of seafood was not big but they had a lot of oysters.

After seeking advice from the fishmonger we bought four variety of oysters grown in the waters on the East side of Vancouver Island. We enjoyed them upon returning to our vacation cabin. My impressions were:

Cortez Gem - This is a larger (in terms of eating it raw) oyster with a nice firm texture. I personally do not like an oyster that is too mild or too small so I consider the Cortez Gem tasty and an excellent buy.

Whale Town - An oyster that is more salty and pungent in flavor. Recommend if you have a more "mature" taste for raw oysters.

Mary Point - A relatively mild and sweet oyster.

Pacific Gem - A very small oyster that is easy to shuck. Very mild with nice firm texture. This is the proprietor's favorite.
